I’m actually writing this after having disassembled and cleaned everything.  And I was right.  It was a broken valve spring on cylinder #2. 

I was also quite satisfied with myself on correctly diagnosing the issue, but that didn’t last long, because this wasn’t a customers car, it was ours.  I still have to pay for all the parts.

I have no interest in giving step by step instructions on how to remove and assemble all the different parts.  This is about my story, which does include some tips that will hopefully be useful.  But I also don’t want to disappoint anyone if you’re looking for help.

I was able to locate a considerable amount of the official Volkswagen documentation from ELSAWIN, and they do give the ‘step by step’.  Please see Part III of this story for that.
